Pip
The bright-side friend
“Good Things Ahead”
If you feel happy today, you don't have to earn it or explain it. A good morning, a joke that landed, a friend who saved you a seat: that warm, light feeling is real, and it belongs to you.

Pip's story
Pip is a small yellow puppy who wakes up before the alarm. Pip is the one who spots the heart-shaped puddle, remembers it's pancake day, and tells you about both before you have your shoes on.
Pip wasn't always sure that was okay. For a while Pip thought being the happy one meant being happy all the time, even on days that didn't feel sunny. Then a friend had a hard day, and Pip found out that sitting quietly next to someone can be a kind of happiness too.
Now Pip looks for the good thing without pretending the hard thing isn't there. That is what "Good Things Ahead" means. It is something to look toward, and nobody has to smile on command.

Pip at a glance
On a Pip day you might
- Wake up with a plan and a song in your head
- Laugh at something small and want to show someone
- Feel like sharing: snacks, news, the good seat
Pip's strengths
- Notices good things other people walk past
- Makes new kids feel welcome
- Bounces back and helps others try again
Tricky parts
- Feeling like you have to cheer everyone up
- Hiding a bad day behind a smile
- Friends who need quiet when you have lots of energy
What helps
- Say the good thing out loud so it lasts longer
- Thank one person for one specific thing
- Let yourself have an un-sunny day when you need one
Pip gets along with Momo. One brings the sunshine, the other reminds Pip that clouds are allowed.
Where happy comes from
People have been curious about happiness for a very long time. In 1872 Charles Darwin wrote that a smile looks much the same on faces all over the world, and later researchers such as Paul Ekman found that people in very different cultures recognize a happy face without being taught.
Happiness does a job. Researchers at UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center describe how good feelings help people connect, stay curious and recover from stress. Nemours KidsHealth tells teens that positive emotions are linked to lower stress and better health.
Two habits show up again and again in the research. One is savoring, which means slowing down long enough to notice a good moment. The other is gratitude. In studies with middle schoolers, kids who wrote down a few things they were thankful for reported feeling more optimistic and more satisfied with school.
If this is you today
Happy can be loud, like jumping, or quiet, like a warm blanket. Both count. When you feel it, tell someone what made it happen. Saying it out loud helps the feeling stick around.
You don't have to post it or prove it. Real happiness is usually smaller than it looks online: a ride home with the right song, a text that makes you laugh. And being a happy person doesn't mean you owe anyone a good mood every day.
Notice joy as carefully as you notice trouble. "You look really proud of that" teaches a feeling word just as well as "you look upset." Try not to make happy the only feeling that gets praised, so a cheerful kid knows the other feelings are welcome too.
Try this
- At dinner, everyone names one good thing from the day, however small.
- Keep a "good things" list on the fridge or in a phone note.
- Thank someone for something specific: "Thanks for waiting for me."
- When something good happens, pause for three slow breaths and just notice it.
