Meet the Feelumis · Mad
Roo
The fiery one
“Big Feelings Are Okay”
If you feel mad today, it doesn't make you a bad kid or a problem. Mad usually shows up when something feels unfair or when something you care about got stepped on. The feeling is allowed. You get to decide what happens next.

Roo's story
Roo is a little red fox with a flame for a tail. Roo cares a lot: about fairness, about friends, about whose turn it really was. So when something goes wrong, Roo heats up fast. Cheeks puff. The flame flickers. Words want to come out hot.
Roo used to think the fire was the problem. It isn't. Fire keeps people warm and lights the way. It just needs somewhere safe to go.
So Roo learned a trick. First, name it: "I'm mad." Then one slow breath, in through the nose, out like blowing on soup. Then decide. "Big Feelings Are Okay" is Roo's reminder that the feeling was never the bad part.

Roo at a glance
On a Roo day you might
- Feel hot in your face, chest or hands
- Want to yell, stomp or slam something
- Keep replaying the thing that wasn't fair
Roo's strengths
- Stands up for what's fair
- Tells the truth about what's wrong
- Has lots of energy for fixing things
Tricky parts
- Words that come out hotter than you meant
- Being told to calm down before anyone listens
- Feeling bad afterward
What helps
- Name it: "I'm mad"
- Move: run, squeeze, scribble hard, push a wall
- One slow breath before you answer
- Later, say what you needed
Roo gets along with Yuki. Roo brings the fire for what's fair, and Yuki shows how to say it in a steady voice.
Where mad comes from
Anger is ancient. Scientists who study emotion, from Charles Darwin in the 1800s to researchers today, describe it as a built-in alarm for "something is wrong here": a blocked goal, a broken rule, a boundary crossed.
The American Psychological Association calls anger a normal and usually healthy human emotion. The Greater Good Science Center notes that when kids look underneath their anger, it often points at what they value most, such as friendship, fairness or belonging.
What matters is the gap between feeling and doing. Nemours KidsHealth tells kids it is okay to feel mad, and not okay to hurt people or break things because of it. A short pause, a breath or a few seconds of movement gives the thinking part of the brain time to catch up.
If this is you today
Mad is okay. Hitting and mean words are not. When your body feels hot, try Roo's trick: say "I'm mad," then blow out slowly like you're cooling down soup. Then tell a grown-up what happened.
Anger often covers something else, like embarrassment, hurt or feeling left out. You don't have to work that out in the moment. Walk away, move your body, and come back when you can say what you actually need. That is strength, not backing down.
Listen first. The Child Mind Institute notes that problems that look small to adults feel real and painful to kids. Validate the feeling and hold the line on behavior: "You're really mad. I get it. I won't let you hit." Save the problem-solving for when everyone is calm.
Try this
- Practice the pause when nobody is mad, so it's ready when someone is.
- Make a "mad plan" together: three safe things to do with the fire.
- Ask: "Is this a two or an eight?"
- Afterward, ask what the anger was pointing at. Usually it's something that matters.
Every kid gets mad. If anger often turns into fights or hurting people, or it's getting in the way of school or friendships, talk with a pediatrician, school counselor or licensed mental health professional.
